Penny Oakes
A Short Biographical Sketch

Penny Oakes started taking piano lessons in her home town of South Boston, Virginia, in the summer of 1989. Throughout high school she competed in various regional and state music competitions through the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools. For six years she accompanied for the children’s choir at her church, and played offertory specials frequently. Penny taught weekly K-5 through 12th grade music classes and piano lessons at her Christian school during her senior year of high school, and again during the 2000-2001 school year. She also directed and accompanied for several school productions.

Since then, Penny has accompanied for many weddings, funerals, school choir competitions, and children’s church choirs. She also served as a church pianist for one year. She studied music education at the university level for two years.

She has been teaching piano lessons for seven years. Penny has had experience with many personality types and some learning disabilities. She has a passion for teaching piano and wants to see her students excel. She is professional yet personal; strict yet understanding. Penny attends piano teacher’s workshops as often as possible to learn new ideas and get re-motivated.
